Muscle Spasms
At Calgary RMT, our mobile massage therapists are frequently requested to assist those dealing with muscle spasms or cramps. Our licensed professionals utilize various techniques to help alleviate these muscle contractions.
Muscle Spasms
Muscle spasms are involuntary contractions of the muscles that typically result in discomfort or pain. Some of the common causes are:
- Muscle dehydration
- Overuse of the muscle
- Poor circulation
- Improper preparation before exercise or other strenuous activity
There are several types of massage that our mobile massage therapists use to help our clients.
- Deep Tissue Massage – A deep-tissue massage involves targeting the deeper layers of muscle to alleviate tension. The therapist works by stretching and loosening the muscle tissue to release built-up stress.
- Remedial Massage – Manipulating the tissue during a massage enhances relaxation by boosting lymphatic flow and helping to eliminate muscle waste products. The process of stretching and pulling not only helps the muscles to relax but also promotes mental relaxation for the client.
- Swedish Massage – This technique involves creating friction between the therapist’s fingers and the client’s skin to boost blood and lymph circulation. It helps release waste products from the muscles and allows oxygen and nutrients to nourish the tissue, making it effective for alleviating muscle fatigue.
There are various techniques used within each of these massage types.
- Effleurage – This technique involves the therapist using long, sweeping strokes with flattened hands to stretch and soften the muscles. It’s particularly effective for relieving spasms caused by prolonged immobility, such as standing for extended periods.
- Kneading – Kneading involves applying firm pressure to pull and squeeze the muscles at intervals. This friction boosts blood flow and alleviates tightness, leading to reduced muscle fatigue.
- Trigger Point – Applying direct, firm pressure to specific muscle points helps alleviate spasms and restore range of motion. This trigger point technique induces a biochemical reaction, leading to temporary numbness in the area. As blood flow increases, the spasm is eventually released.
