Massage Therapy for children
At Calgary RMT, our customer service team is often asked if massage therapy suits children. In general, massage can be beneficial for people of all ages, from infants to seniors. Due to its ability to reduce tension and enhance relaxation, it is frequently recommended for everyone, including children and adolescents.
Massage Therapy for children
In certain situations, massage therapy may not be suitable, but these can be addressed in consultation with our office.
Today’s children face more stress than many adults might realize. They compete academically and athletically, deal with peer pressure, and experience the physical strain from the constant use of electronic devices, affecting their necks, shoulders, and hands.
Research suggests that massage therapy can alleviate stress and help balance hormones. Reducing anxiety and discomfort can lead to improved emotional well-being and healthier sleep patterns.
Injuries
Children who regularly participate in sports or everyday play often experience injuries such as sprains and strains. Massage therapy can be a valuable medical aid in helping your child recover fully. Additionally, it supports muscle and joint health, potentially reducing the risk of future injuries.
Disabilities
Many children have disabilities through genetic issues or as a result of a catastrophic occurrence. Reports are frequently filed that are showing the benefits of massage therapy for:
- Autism – Some children who are initially sensitive to touch have demonstrated greater relaxation after receiving massage therapy. Over time, their sensitivity to touch tends to decrease, leading to better management of behavioural challenges and more consistent sleep patterns.
- ADD and ADHD – Regular massage therapy sessions can help children relax, which often leads to a reduction in hyperactivity. This improved relaxation can enhance their ability to focus, and in some cases, it may even allow for medication adjustments.
- Psychological issues – When children experience better sleep, they are more receptive to psychiatric or psychological sessions aimed at alleviating depression and anxiety.
- Cerebral Palsy – Massage is shown to increase muscle extension.
- Testing – Preschool-aged children often demonstrate better performance on intellectual and manual skills tests. Improved rest from naps contributes to better behaviour and enhanced cognitive abilities.
- Scoliosis – If detected early, massage can help correct this spinal deformity.
Before starting any therapy, it’s important to consult with your medical provider. Our services cannot be provided if the child has a fever, infection, swelling, open sores, or active diabetes.
A parent or legal guardian must be present during the session. The therapist will explain the massage process to the child or adolescent in an understandable way. We ensure that no one is pressured into a session.
For younger children, we suggest starting with a 30-minute session, with longer sessions as they grow older and depending on their treatment needs.
With our in-home massage therapy, Calgary RMT ensures that younger clients can receive care in the comfort of their own homes, minimizing concerns about gossip or bullying.
