Myofascial Release
Myofascial is a term not often encountered. It pertains to the connective tissues that envelop and sustain the muscles in the body. Occasionally, these tissues can become quite painful, leading to a persistent condition known as myofascial pain syndrome, which results from these tissues becoming excessively tight.
Myofascial Release
At Calgary RMT, our therapists specialize in addressing this condition by targeting specific “trigger points” to alleviate tension. Identifying the precise trigger points can be challenging, so many therapists use myofascial release techniques across a broader tissue area. This approach is also commonly used by chiropractors and other medical professionals.
The massage therapist begins by gently stroking the myofascial. If the tissue feels pliable, it’s a positive sign, but if it’s tight or rigid, it’s a problematic area. The therapist will focus on these tight spots to relieve the tension before moving to other areas. Interestingly, the site of manipulation may not always be where the client feels pain. This method involves addressing a range of muscle groups to alleviate trigger points and reduce discomfort.
People with chronic conditions often see significant benefits from myofascial release therapy. It can help alleviate headaches by targeting neck muscles and can also relieve pain or discomfort caused by blood pooling in the lower legs.
Like any treatment, this process may not be for everyone. It is not recommended for those who have:
- Burns, injuries or wounds
- Weakened or broken bones
- Deep vein issues including thrombosis
Myofascial release therapy is not advised for individuals on blood-thinning medications due to potential risks such as internal bleeding, muscle movement issues, temporary paralysis, or nerve damage, though these side effects are rare.
Although numerous studies have examined massage therapy, only a few focus on myofascial release. Many doctors may recommend traditional massage but might overlook myofascial release due to unfamiliarity.
If you think myofascial release could aid your injury or condition, discuss it with your physician. At Calgary RMT, we welcome consultations with doctors across disciplines to explore how massage therapy might fit into your treatment plan. We provide educational materials and discuss potential side effects with both clients and physicians.
If you or your physician have any questions, feel free to reach out. We’re happy to discuss the benefits of myofascial release, other massage therapies, or our mobile services.
