Swedish Massage

When people think of massage, Swedish massage often comes to mind. It’s commonly featured in spa, gym, and clinic advertisements and focuses on physiological benefits.

Swedish Massage

The Calgary RMT massage therapist begins by applying lotion or oil to their hands and using long, gentle strokes across the treatment area. They then address other areas you’ve highlighted as problematic. The therapist alternates between lighter and deeper strokes, adjusting based on the muscle group and to enhance your relaxation.

These strokes come in different types and each has a name:

  • Friction – These are small, circular motions performed with the thumb, fingertips, or knuckles, focusing on a specific area.
  • Tapotement – This involves a rhythmic, percussive motion typically using the outer edge of the hand. It can help relax muscles or alleviate chest congestion.
  • Vibration – This technique involves an up-and-down motion resembling a gentle shake, using the hands and fingers to stimulate soft tissues.
  • Petrissage – This technique involves using the padded areas of the hand, fingers, and thumbs to knead, lift, and squeeze tissues.
  • Effleurage – Usually applied at the start and end of a massage, this technique involves using the palm to make circular motions.

A Swedish massage typically lasts between one hour and ninety minutes. It’s advisable to wait two to three days between sessions, though initially, a twice-weekly schedule can be beneficial. As symptoms improve, the intervals can be extended. For chronic issues, more frequent sessions might be necessary. Consult with your Calgary RMT therapist to tailor a schedule to your needs.

When you are planning your schedule, you need to remember all the benefits that go along with a good Swedish massage.

  • Full body muscle relaxation
  • Increased oxygen
  • Decreased toxins
  • Better blood circulation
  • Stress relief
  • Injury recovery

People choose Swedish massage for various reasons. For those in good health, it helps manage stress and improve posture and repetitive motion habits. Athletes use it to lower the risk of injury and boost performance, while weekend athletes might benefit from a session before a major event like a marathon or after intense workouts.
